15" x 22" paper size, map is 9 1/2" x 10 1/2". Hand colored. A beautiful engraved map with ornate borders, which includes a lenghty discussion (in French) of the Copernican theory on the layout of the solar system. (some agetoning at edges, but overall very good)

Celestial 1685 Mallet Copernicus Sun

"Des Mouvements de la Terre selon l'opinion de Copernic & de quelques autres Astronomes", issued Paris, 1685 by A.M.Mallet. Mallet was a well traveled military engineer and geographer who worked under King Louis XIV. This map is from his scarce monumental work "Description de L'Univers", which was issued in 2 different languages over a series of years in diff. editions, all of which are quite scarce and keenly sought after. A fine and uncommon image of the sun (with a face!) surrounded by a rotating sphere which would appear to represent the earth, showing the effect on the seasons as devised by Copernicus at a very early date pictorially. Beautifully elegant hand colored on a c. 7 3/4 "H x 5 5/8 "W sheet.

1683 Mallet Map/Diagram of Copernicus Sun

This fascinating map/diagram was to be found in Alain Mallet's extensive work "Description de l'Univers" published in Paris. The engraving shows the Sun (with human face) with the planets revolving arount it to illustrate Copernicus' heliocentric theory. All this is in a banner form floating above a tranquil waterside scene of a town, boats and people. The engraving is 6" by 4", with superb hand coloring and is in excellent condition.

"Systeme de L'Univers selon Copernicus", issued Paris, 1685 by A.M.Mallet. This map is from his scarce monumental work "Description de L'Univers", which is quite scarce and keenly sought after. A most charming depiction of the Universe, showing the planets in concentric rings around a sun (which has a face!), according to Copernicus at a relatively early date pictorially. All this is set within clouds, a decorative title cartouche at top. A wonderful little 17th century celestial image, surely not common. Beautifully hand colored on a c. 7 3/4 "H x 5 3/4 "W sheet.

This map is from his scarce monumental work "Description de L'Univers", which was issued in 2 different languages over a series of years in diff. editions, all of which are quite scarce and keenly sought after. A fine and uncommon image of the sun (with a face!) surrounded by a concentric circles which would appear to represent the planets orbiting it according to the celestial system described by Copernicus at a very early date pictorially. The image is acompanied by the original sheet of text describing it. With a charming city view below. Beautifully hand colored on a c. 7 3/4 "H x 5 5/8 "W sheet.
